Lohri Celebrations 2023

As we all know, Lohri Festival is celebrated on 13th of January every year, usually the night prior to Makar Sankranti. This festival is celebrated to mark the end of winter season. It is also called as harvest festival; where people create a bonfire at the time of sunset, wear traditional attires and dance around the fire to celebrate the harvest of crops. People offer sesame seeds, jaggery and rewaries to fire and pray for the abundance of crops and prosperity. This day holds a special place in the hearts of people of Punjab. Lohri festival brings friends and families together. People exchange greetings and gifts with their near ones.


SIGNIFICANCE & HISTORY OF LOHRI

The significance of Lohri is to Thank Lord Sun for making a bounteous harvest and ends the days of gloom and cold. This festival has a very interesting history as well. There was a person in Punjab, he was famous with the name Dulla Bhatti but his real name was Abdulla Bhatti. He was known as Robin Hood of Punjab and even today considered as a legend. He used to save girls to be sold in slavery market at the time of Mughal Empire. Due to his act of bravery, he became famous and almost every Lohri song has words to express gratitude to him. Lohri festival is full of energy and happiness, which is considered to be the new beginning of life with warmth and love. Hope this Lohri brings prosperity, endless joys and good luck in every one’s life.
